Extremely important Navajo artist, Johnny Mike Begay (deceased 1976) created this sterling concho belt. This is an extraordinary piece from the 1970's, each concho and buckle an example of master silverwork including overlay and deep stampwork and natural Morenci Turquoise. Johnny worked at White Hogan in Scottsdale, AZ alongside his brother Kenneth Begay, considered the Father of Modern Navajo Jewelry. Many artists associated with White Hogan became world famous with a lasting influence on Native American jewelry design. Johnny won numerous awards for his jewelry, including ribbons at the Santa Fe Indian Market in 1976 (the year he passed away). His work is also included in “Jewels of the Southwest,” at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, 2002. This belt includes eight conchos and a buckle. The conchos are 3” by approximately 2 1/2”. The buckle is 3 1/2” by 2 1/2” and is stamped a conjoined JMB.
