Item Details
Zuni Pueblo artist Andres Quandelacy created this Fetish Necklace strung on natural coral heishi. The coral heishi is actually two strands braided and each strand strung through each fetish. The heishi is interspersed with handground beads of turquoise, melon shell, lapis, and spiny oyster. The necklace is approximately 26" long, plus the center fetish which hangs approximately 1 1/2" down. The necklace has fifteen hand-carved fetishes, including the center mountain lion fetish. The necklace fetishes include badgers (perseverance, healing and purification), moles (symbolize perseverance) bears (represents living a purposeful life), mountain lion (represent leadership and resourcefulness), and buffalo (which represents protection of family and standing your ground) elk, and ram. The blue bear (denim lapis) is a directional fetish (comes from the west and symbolizes strength, endurance, the power of the soul and a healing power). Badgers come from the south and are the younger brother of the bear, standing between day and night. Mountain Lion is the Elder Brother and the most powerful. He comes from the north and is charged to guard the children of men from evil and be the Maker of Paths of men's lives. Black Moles (carved of jet) come from the underground and symbolize perseverance. Each fetish is approximately 1" long by 1/4", inlaid with coral or turquoise eyes, and carved of many stones and shells, including turquoise, jet, lapis, mother of pearl, malachite, chrysocolla, and apple coral. The center mountain lion fetish measures almost 2" long by 1/4" thick.
