Animals include bears (come from the west and symbolize strength, endurance, the power of the soul and healing power), badgers (come from the south, the younger brother of the bear and they stand between night and day and represent perseverance, healing and purification), frogs (invoke the Spirits to provide rain), birds (who carry prayers to the clouds, asking for blessing), rams (symbolize fertility), buffalo (represents the endurance to overcome one's weakness), fox (possessed with cunning and fleetness), rabbit (gentle spirit and Mother Earth), beaver (protector, builder, strong sense of family and home), turtle (also a symbol of Mother Earth), and the mole (protective, relentless, endurance, and a symbol of the power within the ground of Mother Earth. The handcarved fetishes are graduated in size, going from the almost minute of little more than 1/4" across and high, to ones of almost 7/8" across by 1/4" high. The center Eagle represents the heavens above and symbolizes the spiritual connection, and measures approximately 1 3/8" at the windspread, by approximately 3/4" the length of the body. the fetishes are carved of a multitude of stones and shells, including ox-blood coral, turquoise, serpentine, jasper and tiger eye. This fetish necklace is a precious and extraordinary example of Edna's work. The daughter of acclaimed fetish carver Teddy Weahkee, Edna was the first woman carver of fetishes at Zuni.
